Everyone suffers from anxiety from time to time. But when anxiety takes over one’s life it can become a major health issue. Severe anxiety often alternates from mild discomfort to uncontrollable panic with physical symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, Heart palpitations and insomnia.
Some medications can help ease anxiety but may also cause undesirable side effects and increase the chemical toxicity of the body.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, anxiety is believed to be primarily a disturbance of the Shen or Spirit. Fear and worry are typical emotions related to anxiety. The disorder is classified according to the extent to which it affects individual Yin organs such as the Heart, Spleen, Lung, Liver and Kidneys.
Generalized anxiety disorder responds well to TCM treatment which can be combined with conventional medication or used alone under proper supervision. Acupuncture seems to have the most immediate effect, followed by herbal medicine and Qi Gong meditation.
Regardless of which organ system is affected all acupuncture treatments involve calming the Shen or Spirit, and balancing the Qi of the Heart. Ear Acupuncture points also are effective in the treatment of anxiety.
Research has shown that acupuncture can help ease anxiety by acting on areas of the brain known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as by promoting relaxation and deactivating the analytical brain, which is responsible for anxiety and worry.
In addition, natural herbal formulas help balance the limbic system, which is responsible for areas of the brain involved with the basic emotions of fear, pleasure and anger, as well as with addictions to food, drugs and alcohol.
Mild to moderate depression responds best to Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment, which may be combined with conventional medication or used alone under proper supervision. With severe depression, conventional therapy is more effective and should be employed. In cases of severe depression, TCM modalities may be used to enhance conventional therapy.
